02/11/2006 - Opec chief slams Stern review
The secretary general of oil cartel Opec has slammed the Stern review as a "misguided" and "alarming" piece of research.
Mohammed Barkindo said the review by former World Bank chief economist Sir Nicholas had "no foundations in either science or economics".
He said he was opposed to the research and initiatives expected to come out of the review.
"We find some of the so-called initiatives of the rich industrialised countries who are supposed to take the lead in combating climate change rather alarming," he said.
"One recent example is the review on climate change that was issued yesterday by the UK government in London."
In apocalyptic tones, the Stern review said procrastination on tackling climate change could see global temperatures rise by five degrees over the next century.
Forced migration and economic devastation for up to 200 million Africans could become a reality across the continent because of rising sea levels, floods, droughts, the report said.
