16/11/2006 - Somerset housing group works to save energy
SHAL Housing, based in Bridgwater, Somerset, says it has done a great deal to promote household energy savings, it has emerged.
Over a ten year period the social landlord has been carrying out an energy saving programme in its housing stock that has involved installing controllable and efficient central heating. This in turn has lowered residents' fuel bills, 24dash reports.
"A large number of the houses we own had only an open fire for heating when we bought them and the image of the whole family huddling around that fire trying to keep warm at great expense is not one with which I want to be associated," said SHAL's chief executive, John Thomson.
He added that efficient insulation was a cheap and extremely effective way of saving energy and that the government should do more to promote green energy.
"For the sake of health, education, comfort and, most of all, the planet, the government needs to encourage the use of renewable energy," he said.
The government runs various schemes whereby residents can apply for loans to help with installing insulation or renewable technology such as solar panels.
