08/07/2008 - Toyota Prius to add solar panels
Toyota's next remodelling process will see the installation of solar panels on some of its Prius hybrid models, it has been reported.
A source briefed on the issue told the Guardian on Monday (July 7th) that this move is in response to an increasing demand for environmentally-friendly cars.
The high-end versions of the gasoline-electric Prius could have its air conditioning powered by the sun through the new initiative.
However, the source told the news provider that solar power is not a sound energy alternative with which to power cars, due to the rising cost of silicon and difficulties in energy storage.
The source commented: "It's more of a symbolic gesture. It's very difficult to power much more than that with solar energy."
Meanwhile, it was recently reported that Lotus is in the process of creating a carbon neutral car by developing technology that allows the vehicles to run on CO2.
