01/12/2008 - 60 platforms destroyed during hurricanes
Some 60 platforms in the gulf of Mexico were destroyed during this year's hurricane season, Minerals Management Services (MMS) has concluded.

In its final report, the group stated that some platforms which had been previously reported as having suffered serious damage had be reassessed and categorized as destroyed.

These platforms were responsible for producing 1.05 percent of the oil and 1.3 percent of the gas extracted in the region, equivalent to 13,657 barrels of oil and 96,490,000 cubic feet of gas on a daily basis.

MMS also confirmed that 31 platforms with extensive damage may be offline for between three and six months.

"Damage that would be considered extensive could include underwater structural damage or major damage to pipelines carrying the oil or natural gas to shore," the group explained.

In a statement made on November 19th, the group reported that oil and gas workers have begun reboarding platforms in the region.
