04/12/2008 - TTC 'not appropriate' for cosmetics ingredients
The European Union has stated that the Threshold for Toxicological Concern (TTC) is an inappropriate yardstick for cosmetics ingredients.
A report from the EU's European Committees found that while the criterion is currently used in the consumer pharmaceutical and food sectors, it would not be suited to the personal care industry.
Instead, the organisation seemed to suggest that there was no blanket approach suitable to determining cosmetic toxicity.
A statement from the European Committees read: "The principle of the TTC approach in itself is scientifically acceptable.
"However, the applicability of this principle for risk assessment in specific area is dependant on the quality, quantity and relevance of the underlying toxicity database and a reliable estimation of the exposure to the chemical."
The deadline for public consultation on the TTC is January 2nd next year and interested parties have until this date to comment through online consultation.
