08/12/2008 - Gasification has big future, says expert
The widespread use of gasification to produce environmentally-friendly fuels and substances is getting closer, according to one expert.

In recent years, there has been an increase in gasification techniques, with China, Canada and the US currently leading the way in developing effective production processes.

Using gasification, sources such as coal, residual oils and biomass can be transformed into ethical fuels and ingredients.

Andrew Furlong, director of policy at IChemE, commented: "Over the last two years, I have noticed how the language has changed when chemical engineers talk about gasification.

"It's no longer about 'if', but about 'how' and frequently 'when'."

He added that it was now up to the European Union to follow the lead of other national governments and establish a "robust and effective" trading programme for gasification products.

In other news, BASF recently announced that it was close to completing a takeover deal for the manufacturer Ciba.
