16/12/2008 - ExxonMobil commits $1bn to cleaner diesel
ExxonMobil has allocated $1 billion for the development of refinery facilities which will enable the production of cleaner burning diesel.
The group expects that it will be able to produce an additional six million barrels a day of low-emissions diesel as a result of the investment, with new units and upgrades planned for Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Baytown, Texas and Antwerp, Belgium.
Sherman Glass, president of refining and supply at ExxonMobil, said that the project demonstrated the company's commitment to meeting marketplace needs while also providing cleaner burning fuels for consumers.
"Our increase in diesel production at these three sites will be equal to the diesel produced from about four average-size refineries," he said.
He said that in combination with new emissions control technologies, the cleaner diesel will be of use to both the domestic and industrial market.
In other recent announcements, Rex Tillerson, chairman and chief executive officer of ExxonMobil, has claimed that long-term, growth-oriented policies are key to re-vivifying the US energy economy.
