16/12/2008 - UK soldier killed in Afghanistan
A British soldier killed in Afghanistan yesterday is expected to be named by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) later today.
The soldier from 29 Commando Royal Artillery was fatally wounded while at a forward operating base in the Geresh area of Helmand province, the MoD said.
He received immediate medical treatment before being rushed to the International Security Assistance Force's military hospital in Kandahar.
"Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he subsequently died of his wounds," the MoD said.
Task Force Helmand spokesperson Commander Paul Rowe said the loss was "another hard blow" for forces operating in the southern Afghan province.
She added: "Our loss is nothing though compared to that of his family and friends, and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this dreadful time."
Next of kin have been informed.
