18/12/2008 - UK soldier killed in Taliban engagement
A British soldier has been killed during an operation against suspected Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Defence said the unnamed soldier died in the south of Helmand province yesterday.

He was struck by enemy fire during an operation by his regiment the First Battalion the Rifles in the Nad-e-Ali district.

The soldier received immediate medical care at the scene. He was then taken to the military hospital at Camp Bastion but died of his wounds.

Commander Paula Rowe, spokesperson for Taskforce Helmand, said: "The death of this soldier has left everyone in Task Force Helmand deeply saddened.

"While words cannot ease their devastating loss, our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues at this time."

The soldier's next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
