19/12/2008 - Train hits car in Cheshire
A car has been hit by a passenger train in Cheshire after it apparently rolled down an embankment onto the tracks.

The empty vehicle ended up on the track at North Rode in Congleton where it was hit by a train heading from Deansgate to Stoke-on-Trent.

Police claim a number of passengers suffered minor injuries when the crash occurred around 18:00 GMT last night.

Part of the train was derailed after striking the vehicle and a second train also became involved, leading to all the passengers being evacuated.

A Network Rail spokeswoman said it was currently believed the accident had been caused by a careless motorist failing to apply their handbrake.

British Transport police have begun investigation the incident, with Chief Superintendent Peter Holden, stating: "I think it could have been a lot worse - there were passengers on both trains, and it is remarkable and a real testament to the build of trains these days that we are not looking at any serious injuries."

A number of services between Manchester and London have been affected by the accident, with trains being diverted via Crewe.
