A British soldier has died in Iraq after what the Ministry of Defence has described as a "shooting incident".

The MoD said the soldier, from the First Battalion the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment, died in the early hours of this morning at the Contingency Operating Base in Basra.

A spokesperson said that the soldier's next of kin had been informed and requested a 24-hour period of grace before further details are released.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated," a statement added.
