17/02/2009 - Taliban gunfire claims life of UK soldier
A British soldier has died after his patrol came under fire from suspected Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan.

The unnamed soldier, from the First Battalion the Rifles, died during a routine joint UK and Afghan national army foot patrol, the Ministry of Defence said.

He is the 145th UK soldier to die in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion eight years ago.

"Taskforce Helmand mourns the loss of this brave soldier and we offer our thoughts and prayers to all his family, friends and comrades at this difficult time," said Commander Paula Rowe, spokesperson for Taskforce Helmand.

The soldier's next of kin have been informed and requested a 24-hour period of grace before further details are released.
