Asset management is often overlooked in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), yet its principles hold immense value across all business sizes. While the Institute of Asset Management (IAM) traditionally targets large-scale organisations like utility companies, their approach can also be transformative for SMEs. Many sizable manufacturing firms still operate with minimal asset management tools, which is eye-opening considering the potential efficiency gains.

Here, I take key insights from the IAM Patron’s “Top Tips for Selling Asset Management to Senior Leadership and Making it Stick” and examine them from an amt-assetcheck perspective, illustrating how SMEs can benefit from structured asset management strategies. This blog is not designed to be definitive guidance.

1. Speaking the Language of Senior Leadership

IAM Patron’s view: Align asset management discussions with leadership goals, KPIs, and strategic priorities. Be concise, address pain points, and use storytelling and visual aids to enhance understanding.

SME perspective: SMEs often operate with lean leadership teams who wear multiple hats. To sell asset management effectively, businesses must connect the discipline to cost savings, regulatory compliance, and long-term sustainability. Using real-world SME case studies can make the conversation more relevant.

2. Making Asset Management a Business Priority

IAM Patron’s view: Present asset management as a solution to critical business challenges. Develop a roadmap showcasing both immediate and long-term benefits.

SME perspective: SMEs often prioritise short-term operational needs over long-term strategic investments. A phased approach – starting with low-cost, high-impact asset management improvements – can demonstrate quick wins and build momentum for more extensive initiatives.

3. Aligning Asset Management with Business Goals

IAM Patron’s view: Ensure daily asset management activities contribute directly to overarching business objectives. Demonstrate measurable business impacts.

SME perspective: SMEs need practical, straightforward tools that align with their existing business practices. Cloud-based asset tracking and predictive maintenance solutions can provide clear visibility into asset performance, linking these insights directly to business outcomes.

4. Building Support Networks within the Organisation

IAM Patron’s view: Engage internal stakeholders such as the communications team, change management leaders, operators, and financial executives.

SME perspective: In SMEs, these roles may be consolidated into a few key decision-makers. Identifying asset management champions – such as operations managers or finance heads – can be crucial for adoption. Involvement from finance leaders helps reinforce the cost-saving potential of asset optimisation.

5. Choosing the Right Moment to Introduce Asset Management

IAM Patron’s view: Engage leadership during quieter business periods, link asset management to regulatory challenges, and introduce discussions in early planning cycles.

SME perspective: SMEs often face unpredictable business cycles, but strategic moments, such as after an unexpected equipment failure or during budgeting sessions, offer prime opportunities to introduce asset management improvements.

6. Embedding Asset Management for Long-Term Success

IAM Patron’s view: Make asset management a cultural priority, develop measurable KPIs, provide financial and reputational incentives, and integrate asset management into leadership responsibilities.

SME perspective: Sustainability in SMEs requires practical, scalable solutions. Establishing simple KPI tracking and incorporating asset management discussions into routine leadership meetings can ensure long-term commitment.

Asset management is not just for large enterprises – it’s a crucial discipline that SMEs can leverage for efficiency, cost savings, and business resilience. The IAM’s guidance provides an excellent foundation, but adaption to the SME landscape is essential. By starting small, demonstrating tangible benefits, and embedding asset management into everyday decision-making, SMEs can unlock its full potential.
